Yoga and Ecology, the health of the
nature:
Our civilization is undermining the very foundations of life for all creatures.
As human being damage the
environment Mother Nature is protesting outside with diverse disasters
and inside the human being with a growing problem in our internal psychological
environment as for example with the growing epidemic of depression that
affects us nowadays.
This economy is not proper
because it is based on a non - sustainable consumerism and
such an economy out of harmony with the environment may lead us towards
disaster.
If yoga is Samadhi and
Samadhi is complete union with all in contemplation as by the word "samadhi"
(from sam+a+dha, joining in one); to care for the environment by understanding
the relation of our inner nature with the nature outside is the reason
of the yoga ecology.
If yoga is a connection
with our inner nature, by yoga we can treat ourselves better reducing
the environmental pollution first in our internal rivers (nadi) and in
the same way into the rivers on our planet earth.
To re - establish the connection
with all in order to become the caretakers and protectors of all other
kinds of existence by observing the first yoga principals as "ahimsa".
Inside our human body,
we are containing all the same elements that are part of the external
world.
The yoga practices are related
with control and balance of nature manifestaions inside as: fire (speech),
wind (breath), water (emotions), earth (body) and space (silence)
Yoga postures are related
with the earth, yogic breathing practices are related with the air and
yogic silence is related with the space.
A yogic lifestyle may
minimize our negative impact upon the environment.
For example the yogic emphasis
on a vegetarian diet greatly reduces water pollution, cruelty to animals
and wrong exploitation of natural environments.
Yogic values as simplicity
and self - contentment have their outer ramifications as well, helping
us to be aware of the danger of the consumism and its excesses.
Yoga life denotes nature
respect and helps us to care for ourselves now and for the future generations.
"Nothing originates in
a spot where there is no sentient, vegetable and rational life; feathers
grow upon birds and are changed every year; hairs grow upon animals and
are changed every year, excepting some parts, like the hairs of the beard
in lions, cats and their like. The grass grows in the fields, and the
leaves on the trees, and every year they are, in great part, renewed.
So that we might say that the earth has a spirit of growth; that its flesh
is the soil, its bones the arrangement and connection of the rocks of
which the mountains are composed, its cartilage the tufa, and its blood
the springs of water.
The pool of blood which
lies round the heart is the ocean. Its breathing, and the increase and
decrease of the blood in the pulses, is represented in the earth by the
flow and ebb of the sea; and the heat of the spirit of the world is the
fire which pervades the earth, and the seat of the vegetative soul is
in the fires, which in many parts of the earth find vent in baths and
mines of sulphur, and in volcanoes, as at Mount Etna in Sicily, and in
many other places"

of Leonardo Da Vinci Note 1000
